Highly anticipated as the 6th and most impressive generation of the GTI yet, the 2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI will officially hit North American dealer lots during late summer 2009. In keeping with GTI tradition, the 2010 Golf GTI will be equipped a slightly revised version of the GTI’s famed EA888 turbo engine that boosts output to 155 kW/210 PS. Mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual clutch transmission (DSG), the 2010 Golf GTI mazes out at a top speed of 238 km/h (147.8 mph) and makes the sprint from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 6.9 seconds.
The most notable new feature to be found on the new Golf GTI, however, is Volkswagen’s electronic transverse differential lock (XDS). Essentially eliminating understeer, the XDS allows the GTI to approach near WRX STi-levels of handling, cutting corners with virgin-tight execution. Remarked veteran F1 racer and noted Volkswagen enthusiast, Hans-Joachim Stuck, “It becomes immediately apparent just how precisely the GTI tracks steering inputs. And this steering precision is directly reflected in driving quality. The production car chassis offers practically no hint of body roll.”
Continued Stuck, “However, the GTI not only handles with sports car stiffness; it is also very comfortable. The electronic damper control of its new DCC system, in particular, produces an ideal synthesis of great comfort and excellent handling properties in the GTI. There are of course many sporty cars that are simply too stiff. Yet this one is always right. That must be stated very clearly.” Summarized Stuck succinctly, “…the new GTI succeeds in bridging the gap between a serious business car during the work week, and a competitor on the Nürburgring on the weekend.”
